The City and County of Honolulu is hosting a Military Appreciation Day at the Honolulu Zoo, all military card ID holders can enjoy free entrance to the zoo on Saturday, May 19, 2012.

Saturday, May 19th 2012
From 9am until 2pm

If you’re planning on visiting the zoo for free this day, please remember a few things:

You must present your military card ID (includes retirees and National Guard)
You must enter at Monsarrat Gate Six, across from the Kapiolani Park Bandstand
Free entry only until 2:00 pm

More than a trip to the zoo

Aside from witnessing some of the world’s greatest creatures at the Honolulu Zoo, located near the Kapiolani Park in Waikiki, the event will feature live entertainment from a variety of performers and presenters.

Here’s the schedule for the day:

10:20 am – Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii
10:25 am – Outrigger Enterprises

Food Dude Grub Crawl: Restaurants at The Market Common in Myrtle Beach

The Market Common is home to a number of delicious dining options.

Part two of our “Grub Crawl” takes us to The Market Common, which isn’t exactly up the Food Dude’s alley.

In fact, the chick-centric MC has become the headquarters for the sort of foo-foo food I usually stay away from, like the fine-dining destinations of Divine Prime and Tommy Bahama’s Restaurant and Bar.

But if you shop around, there are plenty of places at The Market Common to get your grub on, even if they do require using utensils instead of the finger-licking, rib-sticking places I prefer. Here are the Food Dude’s top five:

King Street Grill

This corner cafe may have the market cornered for traditional Dude Food at Market Common. You know, the kind of food you can drink a beer with.

From appetizers such as the Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls and burger, meatball and BBQ sliders – to the main dishes – excellent burgers and sandwiches you have to flatten with your fist to fit in your mouth – this is Food Dude territory.

Of course, King Street Grille also offers fancier entrees, which makes it perfect for those days when the Food Dude has spent the day shopping with the Food Dudette. It’s also a nice place to sneak off for a cold beer.

Gordon Biersch Brewery & Restaurant

Speaking of a cold beer, Gordon Biersch brews its own suds on-site and offers a wide range of beers and ales to take the edge off from involuntary window shopping.

But the solids are just as savory as the liquids, including several dishes that are doused in sauces made from the house’s home brews, like the Brewer’s Chicken in Marzan sauce or the N.Y. Strip in Gordon Biersch steak sauce.

The menu is filled with Dude Food options – fish tacos, burgers, pizzas and flatbreads. The only thing tougher than picking out a dish is deciding what beer to wash it down with, but those are good problems to have.

Nacho Hippo

This Mexican cantina is as much about the margaritas and cervezas than the actual food, but those with a taste for some Southwestern spice can find what they’re looking for here.

The Hippo has become a popular hangout with its $3 margaritas and live music on the weekends, but you can also get some good grub. The Oh @&#! Nachos and fish tacos are top notch.

Best of all, the open-air decor and festive environment make for a great place to take a break from shopping.

P.F. Chang’s

This popular national chain has taken Chinese food to the next level, even for Food Dudes who don’t normally do Asian cuisine.

But Chang’s has something for everyone, especially if you like a little heat with your meet. The Flaming Red Wontons and Dynamite Shrimp starters will set your taste buds on fire.

Of course, the main courses do offer some dishes that fall in the chick food category, but there’s also items like the Wok-Charred Beef, Chang’s Spicy Chicken and Salt & Pepper Prawns that are right in the Food Dude’s wheelhouse.

Travinia Italian Kitchen

While walking through the streets of the Market Common shopping district, you can smell this Italian eatery calling your name.

Aromas of garlic, oregano and fresh-baked bread permeate from the doors of this somewhat upscale cafe, but the food is something you can really sink your teeth into.

Offering steak, veal and chicken dishes done the Italian way as well as shrimp, scallops and other fresh catches, Travinia is all about the food. You won’t go home hungry.

New Allegiant Air flights to Hawaii: $159 Tickets

The Nevada-based airline company Allegiant Air will soon be flying nonstop from the mainland to Maui. The annoucement of new Allegiant Air flights to Hawaii was announced May 15, 2012. Come this November, nonstop flights will begin service to Maui, and flights to Oahu will also be available.

The low-down on airfare deals:

Allegiant Air currently offers introductory fares as low as $159 each way, depending on your departure and arrival destinations.

From Kahului Airport (Maui)

$199 to Bellingham, Washington, beginning on Nov. 14

From Honolulu International Airport (Oahu)

$159 to Bellingham, beginning Nov. 15
$179 to Eugene, Oregon, beginning on Nov. 17
$199 to Santa Maria, California, beginning on Nov. 17
$199 to Stockton, California, beginning on Nov. 18

These special rates won’t last long. Here’s the fine print:

Tickets must be purchased by Monday, May 21.
Travel dates must occur by January 15, 2013.

Allegiant Air will begin nonstop service to Hawaii

In the official press release by the airline company, Allegiant Travel Company’s president, Andrew C. Levy, said:

“We are pleased to expand our presence in the Islands with nonstop service to Maui and additional nonstop service to Honolulu from four more of our existing markets.” He added, “This is especially exciting because it comes shortly after announcing initial service to Hawaii from Las Vegas and Fresno.”

Due to the rise in popularity of Kau coffee from Pahala on the Big Island, displaced sugar farmers now have a sweet tooth for the little red Kau berries. In April 2012 the top 10 brews for Coffee of the Year were posted and Kau Coffee received three of the ten positions (6,8 and 10). Five years of rapid growth and recent accolades from the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Roasters Guild has infused this community with new energy.

Big Island farmers looking for a taste of success

Jump in your time-traveling canoe to rewind back twenty years and you’d find sugar was the main cash crop in Pahala, Hawaii as well as many other parts of the islands. Today its a very different story. These farmers were forced to stop farming sugar due to rising costs and stiff competition.

The ever-growing ease of global trade and the cheap products imported from Asia caused Hawaii’s sugar industry to take a huge hit. The southern community of Pahala was dealt an economic blow in 1996 when their sugar mill closed.

New Big Island cash crop on the rise

6 years ago if you asked someone what a Kau berry was they would just give you a blank stare. But, these little berries have single-handedly boosted tourism in a region of Hawaii that hasn’t received much interest before, and the ex-sugar farmers of Pahala, Hawaii are enjoying a refreshing new crop.

The little southern community of Pahala on the Big Island is receiving much recognition; the Kau Coffee Mill is quickly becoming a tourist attraction and major processing center.

Green Flash concerts, open to ages 21+, pair live music with panoramic ocean views on Birch Aquarium’s stunning outdoor Tide-Pool Plaza. Brought to you in partnership with 102.1 KPRi FM.

Concerts are held on the third Wednesday of every month, May-September. The 2012 dates are May 16, June 20, July 18, August 15 & September 19.
